The studio behind Inside Out and Toy Story 4 is ready to get existential again.
At D23 Saturday, Pixar exposed the very first details from Soul, a brand-new original feature coming in 2020– consisting of details about the property and plot, and reveals of its star-studded cast.
Jamie Foxx leads the voice cast as Joe, who teaches music at a middle school however has dreamt all his life of dipping into a distinguished New York jazz club called Half Note.
In video footage shown solely at D23, we see Joe playing the piano in a practice session with a little jazz band, as he explains in his voiceover narration how it feels: “When I move, my only purpose on this world is to play,” he states. “It’s what I was suggested to do.”
When he pauses his playing, the entire band is looking at him, impressed, and he’s invited to come play at the Half Note.
Elated, Joe runs out of the club, and directly misses out on getting killed a number of times (a pile of bricks falls inches away from his head, automobiles and bikes swerve to prevent hitting him) though he doesn’t appear to see.
Then he falls into an open manhole, and wakes up as a small radiant figure– his own soul.
The footage cuts off there, but the presenters onstage described precisely what was going on. Joe’s soul has actually landed back at the You Workshop– the location where all souls start, developing their peculiarities, capabilities, interests, enthusiasms, and dreams, prior to they’re born.
While in this esoteric world, Joe encounters 22, voiced by Tina Fey. She’s an unborn soul who doesn’t seem much interested in ever being born– she’s been at the seminar enough time to form the viewpoint that life on Earth is in fact awful, stressful, loud, and gross.
The set collaborate to determine a way to get Joe back to Earth, taking him through cosmic worlds and, at the same time, making him “reconsider about what it indicates to have a soul,” discussed Docter.
Of course, it would not be a Pixar movie without a star-studded cast. In addition to Foxx and Fey, Soul‘s includes Questlove as Curly, a drummer; Phylicia Rashad as Livia, Joe’s elegant-looking mom; and Daveed Diggs as Paul, Joe’s “neighborhood bane.”
And given the film’s focus on music, it’s only natural Soul‘s got some heavy-hitters involved there too, with new music from Jon Batiste, and an initial rating by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross.
Soul remains in theaters June 19, 2020.
