With the advancement of generalized AI, what’s the meaning of an individual?

Considering The Lifecycle of Software Items

This is a far more sprawling story than the earlier narratives in Exhalation, with far more of a direct plot than the fractal koans we experienced before. That broader canvas provides us a massive buffet of topics to discuss, from empathy, the meaning of humanity, and the worths we guarantee to synthetic entities, the economics of the digital future, and onwards to the futures of romance, sex, kids, and death. I have pages of notes from this story, but we can’t cover it all, so I wish to zoom in on just 2 threads that I discovered especially deep and gratifying.

That profession history gives us a nice framing: it allows us by means of Ana to compare humans to animals, and therefore to contextualize the personhood argument around the digients throughout the story.

On one hand, humans uniquely value themselves as a types, and even the most dedicated digient owner eventually proceeds. As one particularly illuminating passage discusses when a digient’s owner reveals that his better half is pregnant:

” Certainly you’re going to have your hands complete,” says Ana, “but what do you think about embracing Lolly?” It would be remarkable to see Lolly’s response to a pregnancy.

” No,” states Robyn, shaking her head. “I’m previous digients now.”

” You’re past them?”

” I’m all set for the real thing, you know what I mean?”

Carefully, Ana says, “I’m uncertain that I do.”

” … Cats, pets, digients, they’re all simply substitutes for what we’re supposed to be taking care of.”

This owner has made a clear difference: there is only one kind of entity worth taking care of, just one thing that a human can consider a person, and that is another human.

Certainly, throughout this brief story, Chiang constantly notes how the tastes, worths, standards, rules and laws of human society are designed practically solely with humans in mind.

What separates human beings from other animals is that we base decisions on our own previous experiences.

Chiang makes an extremely clear point here when it concerns a business called Exponential, which is interested in finding “superhuman AI” that comes without the work that Ana and the other owners of digients have put in to raise their entities. Ana ultimately recognizes that they can never ever find what they are searching for:

They want something that reacts like a person, but isn’t owed the same commitments as a person, and that’s something that she can’t give them.

Nobody can give it to them, because it’s an impossibility. The years she spent raising Jax didn’t just make him enjoyable to talk with, didn’t simply supply him with pastimes and a funny bone. They were what offered him all the attributes Exponential is searching for: fluency at navigating the real life, creativity at solving new issues, judgment you could entrust with a crucial decision. Every quality that made an individual better than a database was an item of experience.

She wants to inform them that Blue Gamma was more ideal than it understood: experience isn’t merely the very best teacher; it’s the only instructor … experience is algorithmically incompressible.

Undoubtedly, as the owners start to think about when they may offer their digients self-reliance to make their own decisions, experience ends up being the crucial watchword. Their capability to make their own choices in the context of past experiences is what specifies their personhood.

And so when we think about generalized expert system and the hope of creating a sentient synthetic life, I think this base test starts to get at the real difficulty of what this technology can even be. Can we train an AI simply through algorithms, or will we have to direct these AIs with their open but empty minds every step of the way? Chiang discusses this a bit previously in the story:

They’re blind to a basic reality: complex minds can’t establish on their own.

Indeed, Ana and the other main character Derek are forced to keep pressing their digients along, assigning them research and directing them to new activities to continue propelling them to get the type of experience they require to prosper worldwide. Why should we presume a generalized AI would not be any less lazy than a kid today? Why would we expect that it can teach itself when humans can’t teach themselves?

Speaking about children, I want to head over to the other thread in this story I found especially trenchant.

What’s more interesting is what love and bonding signifies in a world where entities do not need to be “genuine.” Ana is a zookeeper who had deep affection for the animals under her care (” Her eyes still tear up when she thinks about the last time she saw her apes, wishing that she could explain to them why they wouldn’t see her once again, hoping that they could adjust to their new houses.”) She vigorously defends her relationship with those animals, as she makes with the digients throughout the story.

However why are some entities loved more than others if they are all simply code running in the cloud? The primary digients featured in the book were actually created to be attractive to human beings. As Blue Gamma scans through the thousands of algorithmically-generated digients, it thoroughly chooses the ones that will bring in owners. “It’s partially been a look for intelligence, but simply as much it’s been a search for personality, the character that will not frustrate customers.”

The reason, naturally, is apparent: these creatures require attention to prosper, however they won’t get it if they are not lovable and desirable. Derek invests his time stimulating the avatars of the digients to make them more appealing, producing spontaneous and serendipitous facial expressions to produce a bond between their human owners and them.

Yet, the story pushes so much harder on this style in layers that get in touch with each other. Derek is brought in to Ana throughout the story, even as Ana stays focused on developing her own digient and keeping her relationship with her sweetheart Kyle going. Derek ultimately realizes that his own fascination with Ana has ended up being untenable, which is a subtle parallel to Ana’s own fascination with her digients:

He no longer has a better half who might grumble about this, and Ana’s partner, Kyle, doesn’t seem to mind, so he can call her up without recrimination. It’s an uncomfortable sort of satisfaction to invest this much time with her; it may be healthier for him if they interacted less, however he doesn’t want to stop.

Indeed, the book’s strongest thesis may be that this sort of love just isn’t reproducible.

And yet, the digients eventually develop similar thought processes.

The story gives us a haunting suggestion that we are eventually a lot of nerve cells that react to stimuli. A few of that stimuli is under control, but much of it is not, instead programmed by our experiences without our mindful intervention. And there we see how these 2 threads come laced together– it is just through experience that we can create affection, and it is precisely affection and therefore experience that produces an individual in the very first location.

Some concerns for Dacey’s Patent Automatic Nanny

  • Can machines play a meaningful role in childrearing?
  • Did the scientific method operate in this instance?
  • Linking this story to the Lifecycle of Software Application Items, what is Chiang attempting to say about childrearing? Are there resemblances or distinctions in between these two stories’ conceptions of children and moms and dads?
  • Should we be concerned if a child just wishes to talk to a device? Do we care what entities a human feels comfy socializing with?
